We cut a natural edge with a spade between the bed and the lawn: a clean, deep line that keeps grass from creeping in and mulch from washing out, with no plastic or metal border needed. Existing brick or steel edging can be reset along the line instead.
The right depth
Mulch is spread evenly at about 2 to 3 inches, kept back from stems, trunks and siding. Too thin and weeds come through; too thick and it smothers roots.
When to mulch
Spring, once the ground thaws, is the most popular time. A fall top-up after leaf cleanup helps protect roots through a New England winter.
